“Why Are You So Dressed Up?”

At least once a week, sometimes multiple times a day, I get this question:

“Why are you so dressed up?”

Many people who know me well have stopped asking this question, because they know that they will always get the same answer:

“Because it’s fun.”

Similar questions include, “How do you wear dresses so often?” and, in these winter months, “How are you not cold?” (Have you ever heard of thick tights, socks, and sweaters? I’m not cold! Well, I am, but not any colder than I always am.)

Once and for all, I’d like to answer these questions and tell you why dressing up is one of my favorite activities.

1. Dressing Up is Fun

Honestly, for some people it is! I’m human and I have days where all I want to do is wear my pajamas all day, but for the most part, I need no excuse to dress up. I like picking my outfit, and I like going to school feeling good about the way I look. And even more than I love dressing up, I love doing my makeup. I wear my makeup for the day, and sometimes, I’ll take my makeup off later in the day and do it again, just for the fun of it. Let’s just say I probably go through more makeup remover than the average person.

2. It Boosts My Confidence

This one doesn’t need much explanation. I feel better and more ready to get stuff done in a cute dress and winged eyeliner than I do in sweatpants and no makeup.

3. It’s a Form of Art

Like any kind of art, fashion and makeup isn’t for everyone, but doing makeup is one of my favorite ways to release creative energy. This is why I do my makeup differently every single day. Each day, I create a new piece of art and try to make the most out of my makeup collection. The same goes for fashion. Putting together new outfits from old pieces is one way to make a statement and to make the most of your wardrobe.

4. It’s How I Express Myself

Each and every one of my outfits is an expression of how I’m feeling, a result of a look I had brewing in my mind, and often an attempt to express how much I’d like to believe I don’t care what anyone thinks. What I wear is a portion of who I am, and what I put on my face is a reflection on how I’m feeling.

So there you have it. That’s why I dress the way I dress. It feels good, it looks good, it makes me happy. But, my point is not that everyone has to dress up every day or dress just like me. My point is that it is extremely liberating to be yourself, even when people ask questions. You do you, because you are amazing.
