Lighthearted: Charity Segovia

Lighthearted, noun; a column on Youer than You dedicated to two things: 1.) shining a light on the hearts of dream-chasers and life-livers and human beings who exist worldwide, and 2.) providing a lighthearted interview session where you can kick back, relax, and get to know new friends.

1. First thing's first: tell us a little bit about yourself!

Well, I am a Jesus follower first and foremost and a writer and musician after that. I finished my first novel when I was fifteen and wrote my first song at five. I'm the singer in an acoustic indie pop duo called Segovia Blue and a fashion blogger for Youer Than You!

2. Show me one of your favorite photos of you and/or a photo that makes you happy!

Favorite photo of you:

3. When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up, and how did those dreams evolve over time? What are your current hopes for your future?

As a little girl I wanted to be a thousand different things but the ones that stuck were a writer and a singer. Presently I'm pursuing a career as an esthetician and will be going to school to get my certificate in May. I still do hope to publish a book or put out an album in the future though.

4. Lightning round! Early bird or night owl? Chocolate or vanilla? Bracelet or necklace?

Night owl, vanilla, necklace!

Charity's favorite quote

5. Your column, Dressed to Love, is dedicated to encouraging people to find their own unique style, no matter what it is. It's inspiring, and I love that. Can you tell me a little about your journey to self love?

This one is fun. Most of my life I dealt with a lot of insecurities but I didn't realize till I was 17 how insecure I was. I had struggled with an eating disorder in high school and was trying really hard after I graduated to move away from it and see the good in me. At the end of 2014 I kind of snapped and, after the hardest year of my life, I bought a ticket to move to Germany for a year. My best friend gave me a journal to take with me and I'd been writing in a different one that I got from my Abuela so while I was gone I could write about my adventures and focus on myself. I only ended up staying for six months, but I was seriously so cleansed by the time I came home. I still have hard days for sure but actively choosing to see myself as someone who is gorgeous and worthy is one of the healthiest decisions I've ever made.

6. What's one fashion accessory you couldn't live without?

Earrings. They are my biggest staple. I'd seriously pick them over shoes. I feel so incomplete without earrings.

7. What's the funniest thing that's happened to you recently?

My boyfriend walked into the room laughing and showed me this:

8. What are your 3 favorite movies?

The Patriot, Dead Poets Society, and Star Wars (the whole franchise counts as one movie I'm not cheating).

9. If you had a time machine and could go back in time to talk to a teenage version of you, what would you say?

Oh man. I'd probably go to when I was 16 and say something like...

"Oh, Honey. You are about to step into a really wild season. You are going to learn so much and love so hard you just about break. You are going to meet some gorgeous people and discover that the plans you've always had aren't necessarily the best options for you. But you are also going to run into a really difficult situation that is going to take a while to come to grips with and recover from. I know I could tell you what to do to avoid it but I won't. I'm not going to stand in the way of what is going to be an amazing period of growth. Just know this: you are radical, you are exquisite, you are brilliant, you are brave. And you're going to be okay. Promise."

10. If you could give everyone in the world a few words of encouragement right now, what would you say?

You're more wonderful than you give yourself credit for. Every thread of your being is composed of cosmic dust and rose petals and strength. And nothing you could say or do or believe about yourself could ever change that.
