If You Give Up, Keep Going

We all have the passion that we hold close to our hearts. It might even be the thing that makes our heart beat. It could be composing music, playing the piano, reading books, science, learning, making art, raising kids, traveling, mechanics, sports, or generally being awesome. Whatever it is, it's something that you care about a lot.

But maybe it's something you've thought about giving up.

Like everything else, our dreams sometimes require hard work. Sometimes they require the hardest work of all. Whether you dream of large success or you have this passion that you do when you need to recharge, there are still moments we're tempted to quit.

Maybe it's something you have quit.

I can't tell you how many times I've "given up" on writing novels. I've always loved it deep in my soul, and it's something I just can't seem to stop. And yet, there are times where I don't write. The inspiration dries up and the words won't come.

And yet, in the end, I always keep coming back.

I guess that's the advice I have to give to you. Sometimes we might quit. We might think we're done for good. You might close the lid on the piano, put the lacrosse stick down, let your keyboard get dusty, lose your paintbrush. But the thing that most defines you is that you start back up again.

Obviously, the first plan of action is to try not to give up. You hear it again and again in motivational speeches and self-help books.

But sometimes we do give up. And what you don't hear as often is that... that's okay. Don't beat yourself up over it. We're only human.

The thing is that you can't give up permanently. You can give up, but you can't give up forever. You can rest for a while. You can recharge from your craft. But then you have to get back up again. You have to keep going.

Remember how much you love what you do? Remember that burn your stomach when you think about it? Come back to that feeling again and again and again. Please, please don't give up forever. The world needs your music, your art, your writing, your sports, your laughter, your voice, you. The world needs you.

I believe in you and your value, and I believe in you and your talent. I believe in you and your ability to get back up again.

Please don't give up. But if you accidentally do, please come back. It's never too late. What you love--and the people who love and support you--will always be there to welcome you back home.

This post is dedicated to my friend Ang, who helped me think of a topic for this post, when, ironically, my inspiration quit on me.
