This is Your Year

We’ve spent a lot of time talking about how much 2016 sucks.

It’s become it’s own meme at this point. “How much worse can 2016 get?” “how is 2016 even real” “this is the worst year ever!” And I get it. It’s been a big year, full of strange twists and turns and huge world events. Now more than ever we have access to everything that’s happened this year, all over the world, the second it happened, and that infodump is enough to overwhelm everyone...and to make us forget that every year is strange and tragic and messy and wonderful and ugly all at once. But we cannot deny the truth of 2016, no matter how it went for us personally.

The truth is that you grew this year. Whether you liked the growing or not, whether you noticed it or not, whether you felt anything or not, you grew. Over the past 365 days you’ve been shaped by new experiences, new people, new concepts. You learned something you didn’t know before. You met someone you’ve never met before. You took another step forward, and you’ve become someone new. Without this year, you wouldn’t be equipped to take on the next year. Which brings me, of course, to my proposition: 2017 starts tomorrow.

let’s make it our year.

What happened in 2016 is over and done. Maybe you’ve been permanently shaped by some of the events that went down, but they’re gone now, they’re in the past, they’re history. And you are something new because of it. We’re moving into a new year that we’re prepared to handle now, and we should. You have a chance to stop looking back or dreading all of the horrible things that will go down this year, and instead elect to grab 2017 by the horns and make it happen. Take that chance.

Throw the idea of “New Year’s Resolutions” out the door. No one has ever been helped by those, not really.

Do something you never thought you could do.

Take the first step in something you’ve wanted to do for a while.

Work hard work hard work hard work hard. Don’t give up. Giving up right away is the first step to making it another disappointing year for yourself.

Go for what you want.

Fail. Fail spectacularly.

You don’t have to start going to the gym three times a week suddenly. You don’t have to become a lifestyle blogger with a healthy oatmeal breakfast every morning at 6am. You don’t have to turn your entire life into some productive, world-changing thing.

You just have to let yourself take steps, one at the time, instead of holding back.

You just have to take the opportunities you would previously ignore.

You just have to go for it.

Attitude matters. Not defeating yourself matters. If you go into 2017 thinking it will be 2016 all over again so you might as well give up...then you’ve screwed yourself over before you even had a chance to start. You can’t influence everything that happens this upcoming year. But you can influence how you react to it, and what you tell yourself.

Make 2017 your year.

It starts with you.
