Music Mondays: Humble & Kind

Last week, after posting I Hope You Dance, I realized just how much music means to me as a person. It is such an important part of my life, and something that makes me feel something. So I've decided to make the column Music Mondays where I'll share a new song and write about that song.  I'll take a song and I'll focus on a section of that song that means something to me.  It won't be a weekly column, probably biweekly.

That being said, I'm focusing on the song Humble & Kind by Tim McGraw this week. I first heard this song about 6 months ago on country music radio. At work, we listen to only pop music, so on my way to and from work, I always flip to the country music station to get a different genre of music. I can't stand hearing the same songs over and over and over and you can only listen to the Top 40 Hits for so long.

So, Humble & Kind quickly took a special place in my heart from the first time I heard it. Now, it's one of my favorite songs.

Hold the door, say please, say thank you
Don't steal, don't cheat, and don't lie
I know you've got mountains to climb,
but always stay humble & kind.
When the dreams you're dreaming come to you
When the work you put in is realized
Let yourself feel the pride,
but always stay humble & kind

The lyrics above are from the chorus. I think they hold some of the best advice for young people.

Hold the door, say please say thank you - these are things that your parents probably taught you when you were about three, but I think sometimes that we forget about the little things.

Don't steal, don't cheat, and don't lie - much bigger things to remember, but still oh so important. Have you ever thought about cheating on a test at school, or about lying to your parents about something that you did/didn't do?

I know you've got mountains to climb - I think in a lot of ways, as people growing up in the 2000s, it's a lot harder than it was before. You have more pressures that people before you - pressures to figure out what you want to do with your life, who you want to date, who you want to be friends with, how you want your life to turn out...so many questions - so many mountains.

But always stay humble and kind - this reminds me of Aimee's post from Saturday where she talked about always being kind, no matter what the circumstances.

When the dreams you're dreaming come to you, when the work you put in is realized, let yourself feel the pride but always stay humble and kind - You will get to a place where all the work you've put into what you're trying to accomplish is going to come to completion. You're going to accomplish what you always wanted to. Stay humble - don't brag, have modesty. You're allowed to be excited, even proud of your accomplishments, but stay humble - you never know what is going to happen tomorrow.

Humble & Kind has become one of my favorite songs. It is a great song to help you through the day, the week, the year. It is written from the perspective of a father to his daughters (Tim McGraw to his beautiful daughters Maggie, Gracie, and Audrey), but I think that it's a great song for me to sing to YOU GUYS.

You are going to accomplish what you set out to do. You're going to be something amazing - going to DO something amazing. But always stay kind; try not to think of yourself more highly than others.

Be Humble. Be Kind.

fyi: I recorded myself singing this song about 15 times. My mom asked me if I was going to keep singing it over and over until every imperfection was fixed, or why I kept starting over! I realized after the last time I recorded it - the one I'm uploading that ISN'T perfect - that it wasn't ever going to be perfect. Because I'm not perfect. But my imperfections make me real. So, I decided to upload it despite the flaws. I hope you can appreciate it.
