Breathe

Doesn’t it feel like life has been non-stop lately? Places to go, people to see, essays to write, stories to plan, posts to blog, Pinterest to surf, errands to run, shifts to work. Our lives are a never-ending stream of work, or procrastination, or social events, or assignments. When we have a moment to stop we always feel like we should be doing something. It’s in our nature now, and it’s all over our society.

Be productive! Be busy!

But sometimes

you

need

to

b r e a t h e.

Even when the air is being crushed from your lungs, you need to breathe.

Even when life demands all your attention, you need to breathe.

Even when essays have to be written,

Even when the world around you is hurtling forward and you feel like you’re being left behind,

Even when you would rather tune out and spend six hours watching Netflix instead,

you need to breathe.

Do it now. Take a deep breath. Stop what you’re doing. Pull air into your lungs; think about that air, taste it, let it fill your body until you can’t take any more. Push it back out, taking the bad with it, draining the tension from your shoulders, leaving you fresh.

Inhale, exhale.

Keep breathing.

Sometimes, breathing is an effort. It has to be intentional. It doesn’t come from procrastination, from hiding from your responsibilities — really breathing comes from stopping everything, from making that moment about rejuvenating yourself. Sometimes a breath can remind you of what’s true in the midst of all the messages in your head.

Inhale.

Life is tough, but you are capable of being tougher.

Exhale.

Stress will not rule you.

Inhale.

Today is a lovely day and there are so many possibilities for an hour from now, or tomorrow, or next week or next month or next year.

Exhale.

What’s done is done and you are going to keep. moving. forward.

Sometimes, you can’t take away all the stress. Sometimes you can’t retreat into a spa like environment and practice “self care” that involves fancy smoothies and bathrobes and calming music. Sometimes, life doesn’t stop for that, and you can’t afford to take that break. Sometimes breathing is messy and not the way you think it should be.

But sometimes, all you need is a breath of fresh air.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Pick yourself back up. Dust yourself off. Tend to your bruises and smile at the sky.

Tell someone you love them; send your friend a letter or a nice text out of nowhere.
Stretch out your bruises and cuts and keep going. Keep breathing.

You’ve got this.

Have a good week, loves. I believe in you in all your messy glory.
